I agree completely.OTOH I think its also important not to push the 'constructive criticism' too far particularly for less experienced astrophotographers.
I can see exactly what you mean. All we can do I suppose is encourage each person at their own level. Astrophotography can be very challenging and it's difficult sometimes to comprehend the time and effort that goes into a single image. But then you know yourself, what do you say when someone posts something which, is not great at all. Is it best then just to say nothing at all? I don't know the answer to that question.

Certainly, I gauge my feedback based on the imager's experience and the equipment they have used to take the image. The more experienced/shorter focal length images get the full monty whilst newbies get lots of encouragement.
That said, I do find some of the praise rather gushing at times. There's no harm in that of course but when you've seen an imgae of M42 by Rob Gendler, what we do pales into the distance and can hardly be described as truly stunning. Of course, that assumes the poster has seen a Rob Gendler or Jim Misti image

I know what you mean Dave. In comparison to Rob Gendler et al, we all must look like a complete bunch of wasters!
I suppose it would be worse if someone said our image was a load of rubbish and a waste of photons!

Quite right too Michael. Dave Mc put it well when he said the feedback should be tailopred to the users equipment and experience. If we all had 32" RC's like Gendler and Misti and the skies to go with it then we could expect to be slammed for producing imasges of the quality we do. But were operating at a tiny fraction of the budget of those guys. We judge each others images by the quality we've come to expect from each other and that's quite right.
One thing I've seen on other boards which you don't see so much here is people who have never taken an image in their life roasting guys doing half decent work. That gets up my nose big time. It's only when you are engaged in the pursuit of taking such images can you fully appreciate the amount of work involved. Thats why I sometimes sigh when I read someones post who has fuji finepix and a dob and wants to take gendler quality images. The last thing you want to do is put them off, but theres no nice way to say go out and invest 10K or more. Cause unfortunately astrophotography is not cheap hobby

Dave.

OK, you asked for it
I think that the DPP or curves medium has been pushed too far. Dave and I compared our M45 shots some months ago and I can make mine look like that, but IMHO if background areas appear lit then you need to back off a bit.
Is tracking just a tad off?
To be honest at this point, pretty much everyones opinions are subjective.
Good shot!
Later,
Jed.
