Hi

Not sure how exactly this is done but you need to take two images. one to bring out the out lying stuff with a long exposure and another a short exposure to bring out the core.

Then I think in Photoshop you can somehow superimpose the central core on one image over the burned out core in the second to get a final image with the detail in both.

I wonder how to not to over expose the core as I said I only did 39 x 30 sec exposures with 1x1 binning. What would the core be like if I did a 5 min exposures

Carl,

I am assuming your camera is 16-bit and therefore the maximum ADU is 65536. If this is the case, I would be very surprised if you are burning out the core with a 30-sec exposure.

Depending on the software you are using, check out the histogram and/or the pixel values for the core and proceed from there. I would suggest an exposure which will approach 65536 for the core (but not reach it) and then to proceed with a non-linear stretch (such as DDP, ASINH, gamma, gammalog etc) to get everything into a more suitable range.

I have taken 10 minute subframes of M31 through the 80 mm and the core has always been the same as 1 or 2 minute stacked frames. Close in may be a different matter.

Thanks a lot men I did not relies Andromeda would be so big is the 80ED.I would of loving to get some color that night for the image. I cannot wait to get some guiding going for some long exposures I was amazed to get so much detail in the first night out. plus there is so much to the processing but Dave Grennan gave me great run through Images Plus.it's a great peace of software ROLE ON THE NEXT CLEAR NIGHT

I was looking at the image again Carl and it looks like you may have clipped the white point during the processing. Try another processing run leaving the white point at the far end of the histo then use curves and black point adjustments only. Thats what I usually do with M31 and it keeps the core fuzzy rather than harsh.
