For the removal of orange glow I use the method described here on my website....

www.pevans.me.uk/html/dark_sky.html

Also adjustment of black and white points for each individual colour.

Thats pretty much what I do.
Sometimes I just use the channel mixer and bring back the red.
It depends on how bad the Light Pollution is.

Presumably at the 18mm wide-angle setting Frank?

Correct. It' the 18-55mm at 18.

I've been searching the net and quite a lot of star scape pics and milky way pics with landscapes in the foreground have quite noticeable light pollution.
I'm thinking it's left in there deliberately because if you remove it you can't see
where the sky meets the horizon , and any nice positioning against interesting
features would be lost.
Also, most don't seem to care about noise.
I have a milky way shot from the same night I was gonna just not bother with..
now i reckon I'll give it a go and see what the end result comes out like.

I have to say I prefer the second image, I don't see a whole lot of graininess in it either, the horizon glow doesn't detract from it.
I personally don't mind some graininess so long as its not obtrusive. I don't mind abit of processing as long as it adds to the image, but I do prefer a natural looking image.

Maybe it's just my eyes but I can see lines in it,
an artifact of high ISO I presume.
That second image is untouched out of the camera
so I guess a bit of processing there should'nt detract from it too much.
