Origin of the term is from the French word "vert" which can also mean "fresh" (or "new") as well as "green". As an aside, the "glass" slipper in Cinderella is a corruption of the old French word "verre" which doesn't mean "glass", but "fur". Well, you'll be amazed what you learn on an astronomy web site
