Moon:this just looks weird. was created by pj30something
Taken tonight with Nikon coolpic L5 on a tripod. I think there may have been dew on my camera lens because i dont remember seeing the halo, naked eye.

What you've go there Paul is huge overexposure which has flooded your CCD causing the image to bloom over into adjacent pixels. You've also got a bit of correctly exposed Earthshine on the dark side - that's to the left of the overexposed area.

This has happened because your autoexposure system has seen a large area of black and a small area of white and tried to average it out to a "correct" exposure.

Photographing the Moon requires Daylight settings on the camera.

I'll give it a try.

I've never had much luck with the camera unless imaging through the scope. I was just messing about last night to see what i could get.

Hey Paul,
You've overexposed that shot and cought the earthshine on the moon.
The glow around the moon is to be expected.

Good attempt Paul, Earthshine is visible indeed, while the sunlit side is over exposed, to be expected as Dave rightly stated. Was this shot taken in full auto mode? Try different settings on your camera; you might have a “program mode” / “aperture priority mode” or something similar whereby you can adjust many settings to adapt to such a shot. Keep experimenting and get to know your photographic equipment, it will be worth it!

Here is a shot I took last year from my back garden in program mode with an ordinary 3.2mp Olympus digital camera at full x10 optical zoom of the Moon and Venus. Earthshine is visible with the sunlit side overexposed as expected but the image is not washed out entirely. I should clarify that I was adjusting camera to obtain a photo of earthshine phenomena.

I had my cam set to night mode. There is a setting on the cam named "Exp +/-"..................it goes up to +2.0 and down to -2.0, by default it is set to 0. Not sure what this setting does.

I guess now i have the tripod for the cam i should experiment with all the setting to find out what works.

I do like the way the earth shine came out on the pic.

Looks like its clearing here now so i might get a chance later to get out and mess about..............after all the eclipse is only a week away.
