Hi John,

I'm certainly up for this one. Romantically I would absolutely love to go to Easter Island. A wideangle with the heads would be a fantastic opportunity. But we are looking at 70-80% chance of cloud cover! To quote Martin Mobeberley's book "It is easy to say 'maybe we will be lucky in there situations', but, as a victim of Hawaii in 1991 my mind immediately looks for the word 'Desert' on any eclipse track and statistics of 90% in my favour". OK so there's no desert but there are better statistics.

There's a clear call to be made. I wouldn't worry about the hotel being booked out. A tent is all I need! What might be defficult for Easter Island is actually getting there. I researched it a while ago and flights aren't that frequent.

All that said a ship will certainly be better for finding a whole in the sky. I suppose we've a bit of time before we commit. What are your feelings on it?

Hi Daniel,

My feeling are while Easter Island would be a great sight, the prospects of
cloud and nothing else to see for miles around call for other options.

A ship in French Polynesia would seem the best option, as well as mobility
for the eclipse, there are lots of islands to visit.

Also, should get great view of southern skies.

I have not seen much in the way of tours, perhaps they are waiting for this years eclipse to be over,

I'm skipping this one but will be going to the one after which is November 2012 in the Cairns/Port Douglas area of North Queensland.

It's a tough one really,
Easter island is really a no go in terms of cloud cover and the expense of getting to French Polynesia would in my mind have to warrent very good chances of clear skies, which there aren't
We took a chance on Russia, it didn't cost a fortune so if it didn't work out it was not going to send me into a depression.
I'm not so sure I can justify the trip for this eclipse??
