I'm beginning to wonder will we ever know? Wait till we hear the ufologists claiming it for themselves!!

East to west trajectory. This would make a satellite retrograde. Retrograde satellites are very rare (literally only a handful exist);

I was thinking the same think myself, but wasn't 100% sure.
Good to see that confirmed.

Depens what you call "space debris".
I wouldn't rule out a meteor based on the above.

By that time it was due North, at an altitude of 50 or 60 degrees and was a spectacular sight. It had fragmented into a dozen or more pieces, many of which were disintegrating further. We watched it as it passed slowly to the West where it faded from view to the WNW. Like many of the others, I was too gobsmacked to make any notes, so I'm guessing that it took about 10 seconds to disappear. It was an amazing spectacle, a little spooky because it was so unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Lucky night!

Reminds me of the only time I saw something of this magnitude, back in either December 1993 or December 1994, can't remember whish. Something just like in that linked video falling near Orion one night, mostly of a red colour. No internet at the time, but I do remember a few sightings were reported on the news. This event is what the internet missed out on back then!
