Seanie, I couldnt have said it better myself, wonder if I could have seen it with Lidl's latest offering
www.lidl.ie/ie/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20050901.p.Telescope
I can always hear the aurora long before it is visible by listening on 48.250 48.252 and 49.560mhz and a few other TV carriers from northern Europe running high power, the effect to the tv signals is nothing short of incredible, I dont have recordings of these but this is what it does to a morse signal that would normally not be readable, the auroral curtain offers a reflective layer that allows very long distances to be worked, voice is possible but the signal is very distorted due to dopler shift
Example 1... normal morse signal on 50mhz from St Paul's isl off Canada reflected off the E layer
www.qsl.net/ei5fk/cy9ss.wav
Example 2 ...Ken G3WCS Cheshire calling me via aurora on 144mhz www.qsl.net/ei5fk/g3wcs.wav
No signs of aurora here in Cork tonight though there is a high latitude aurora warning alert

Con Buckley and I went up to the mountain near Killaloe last night and there was no aurora visible up to 11.30. The milky wy was fantastic
Then the fog came in, its only when we decended that we realised we were in the clouds.
By the way, anyone wanting to build an observatory in munster would not go wrong selecting this site, you're actually above the light pollution/haze and you can see Limerick, Nenagh and all of Lough Derg, a fair swath of the country. Killaloe itelf is not visible as its over the edge
We were up there observing Halloween last year and we were looking down on the fireworks on the towns, very nice.
Its probabilty the best site I've ever used in this country

Radio aurora now, looks good too, signals from central Europe.
Hope there is a visual tonight, this is about the 3rd or 4th best one in 2005

Martin Mc Kenna
coruscations attending the whole length of the luminosity, giving to the phenomena the aspect of a wrathful messenger, and not that of a tranquil body pursuing a harmless course..comet of 1680

I will be watching tonight
Clear skies everyone. We have real bad thunder and lightning at the moment...lights are blinking now!
