Dave --
I also keep meaning to get more active in Beagling.
:
Also known as "poor man's fox hunting". Basically the same idea, but replace the hounds with beagles, the fox with a hare, and the human participants follow around on foot instead of on horseback.
In other words, spend an afternoon running around the Irish countryside chasing a pack of beagles who are chasing a hare (usually in circles).

12 acres?
Sure why would you want a garden that big?
Paul --
Umm... to keep fit?
Actually, that's all that is left. The original gardens around the house were closer to 80 acres, but most of that was sold off and converted to farmland long before we entered the picture. Sadly, this included the razing of a 5 acre orchard and kitchen garden that was planted around 1800.
One of our neighbors has recently cleaned out and dredged the ornamental lake. (He runs a landscaping company, so he had all the big machinery to do it.) Even a pair of swans have returned.

I assume this all ends up as bad news for the hare right?

Not usually. In fact, I've never been on one where the beagles actually caught anything (even a rabbit). Mostly it's just a lot of barking, tail wagging and running around. I understand that every once and a while they will catch a hare which has already been injured from some other mishap.
