send you on some links to a couple of uk forums where you wont find a bad attitude
don't have time for the cat fighting and smart one liners that seem to be prevelant here on IFAS.
Pretty sweeping statements there Dogstar. Would you like to elaborate?

Hey John are you a member of any other astro boards there's a lot of them out there. I drop in on this one from time to time to read this very type of post, i find alberts.......... very amusing but the admins in this board in general seem to be full of their own importance i also find this amusing. A lot of the folk on other boards are usually very friendly and helpful just drop me an email and i will gladly send you on some links to a couple of uk forums where you wont find a bad attitude, these people are just passionate about astronomy and don't have time for the cat fighting and smart one liners that seem to be prevelant here on IFAS. There is another Irish Astronomy forum starting soon so hang in there and you will have a choice on who you want to talk to
First off, I use Very high speed broadband in work and a decent broadband speed at home and I think the 200k image size MAKES PERFECT SENSE
I'd prefer to see a thumbnail of an image that someone posts, and if I like it I'll happily click on the full size image to view it in all it's magnificence. I am against filling the fourms with large images that extend beyond the screen size and therefore make the reading of comments and posts difficult because I have to scroll all over the page to read them.
I'm sorry John but I think your making an issue where their simply isn't one, the current image rule is fine IMHO.
Dogstar, I think your being very harsh to the board admins, I've only been at astronomy for less than a year and in that time I've found any of the admins that I've been in contact with on this site to be more than friendly and genuine people to speak to. Being a moderator on such a forum is not an easy job (done this on other sites), your always going to piss someone off with your decisions but without the admins to enforce the rules the site would turn to dog sh1t in no time. Just look at the Society for Popular Astronomy site and see the trouble their having lately with porn and abuse being posted, I've never seen it here thanks to the work of the admins and moderators.
Two points for the admins to consider:
1) The 200k rule is fine, I'd suggest leaving it as is.
2) This thread is a waste of time, at this time of writing 117 people have viewed this and only 2 people have an issue with the rule. I'd suggest closing the thread and moving on with other discussions.

I just don't think the 200k limit is compromising the image quality that much and like others have said, its not like you can't post a 200k 640x480 version 'in thread' and also link to the full res uncompressed version off site/off thread.

Full of their own importance would be running boards in the way that suits themselves and not listening to user feedback and requests. However there have been requests for time to time to limit the size of images posted for readability and slow connections. We've tried to come up with something sensible to accommodate all users as best we can. There are astrophotographers who moderate here as well and we came up with what seems reasonable to help people on slow connections and also not limit people wanting to showcase their work. For what's its worth we looked at other forums as well, cloudy nights for example has the same 800px limit but a size limit of 100kb; the Society for Popular Astronomy have a limit of 55k.
As I've said before if it turns out that the 200k limit results in images being of a poor quality and too many compression artefacts, or if all the dial users email us and say its still too much then we'll look at changing it!
Right now I'm off to look through the PST before the Sun disappears completely!
