I heard that they had a total of 300 units, but that seems a bit high given that some stores had as few as 2.

Maybe high concenration area stores like Dublin and Cork etc would get in excess of 8 or 10 a piece?

Hi all,

Someone in work who is a non-astronomer has seen this Lidl offer and is considering buying one. Is this the 6 inch Schmidt Newt with GoTo or the 6 inch Newt with the tracking but no Go-To? He would like Go-To so he was asking me about it, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks for the replies to my earlier question. After much swaying to and fro, I am close to going for one.

It seems reasonable as a percentage of wages for a pretty good telescope.

I have some more questions:

The electronic base (which hopefully would work) and controller.

I understand these do not connect to a computer directly at all and are self contained. If I wanted to connect it to a laptop and use an astronomy program to move the telescope what are my options there? I believe that I would need a serial cable. Is the telescope then controlled by standard commands which are given by astronomy programs or would I need to use a proprietary program from Meade or its associate?

The mount

How would I go about making an Alt-Az mount for this telescope, if I just want to do a bit of planet watching or something.

Neill,

It is a 6 inch Newt with a #497 Autostar controller, so it will have full Go-To capabilities same as the ETX-125
