Well well well,

Is it not any wonder that Al thinks AI ignores him when he's coming out with childish immature comments like this?
I know some of you really despise David Moore and Astronomy Ireland in general but so what? AI will be around for a long time, how long will some of the other organisations or societies be in existence? Come to think of it what will happen to this site after Bart completes his studies in Maynooth and moves on?
Some of you even think AI do not have any interesting talks, Eh? The lectures that AI hold are designed for the beginner AND the more advanced amateur. Go to the AI website and check out the itinery of talks for this year, you might be suprised at the quality, both of the contents and the speakers. The last AI talk in Dublin was packed with over 100 people in attendance and had to be moved to the largest lecture theatre in DCU to accomodate everyone. How many attended the last meeting of, say, the ias or sac? For those who could not make it on the night it's available on the web and a dvd copy is in the works. What other so called national organisation does that?
This infighting in the Irish amateur astronomical community is counterproductive and a complete waste of time. There are better things to do.

I think it's best if nobody responds to this thread.
Sorry, but I have to say something...
spaceboy (and anyone who wants to go on the defensive about how great A&S is), let me tell you something. While you deem it necessary to play down the efforts of the IAS and SAC (as your examples), don't forget, it is easy to put the rest of us damn honest, regional clubs to shame when we don't have a dedicated leader trying to make a living out of a hobby at the expense of those who don't know any better. IAS, SAC, TAS, IAA, CAC have all been there longer than A&S. This crap of their 3,000/9,000/10,000 members is just cock and bull. We all know it, because he doesn't have that many! Counting all the names who have joined since a clubs inception does not give a proper head count in population terms of how strong your club is. Its down to the efforts you can do on no monaey, lots of sweat and tears, little or no payback for your endeavours, and seeing the appreciation from all those poeple who keep coming to your club again and again - even those who have left A&S's money grabbing techniques of providing an astronomical service.
And don't you even dare compare the efforts of the rest of IFAS's clubs with A&S - hell, the population is still dupped into thinking "Astronomy Ireland" still exists!!!
Its a con! Its one man's money making racket! And those 100 poeple who attended the lecture you mentioned were from Dublin! A hub of almost 1 million poeple!
You want to do a head count? Then compare TAS's average head count of 25 per lecture from a hub of only 14,000 - do the maths spaceboy, TAS gets more per head of populataion than A&S ever does! Oh, you don't like me using A&S techniques to exaggerrate the statistics a little in TAS's favour? Well tough - you seem used to it in Astronomy & Space. Which also adds to TAS's membership of c. 1,800. Not bad for over 15% of a small midlands town, wouldn't you say?
Now leave me alone while I cool off...

100 people out of a membership of 10,000! Thats only 1%. I'm guessing ALL the other clubs have better turnouts than that! The last AI talk in Dublin was packed with over 100 people in attendance and had to be moved to the largest lecture theatre in DCU to accomodate everyone. How many attended the last meeting of, say, the ias or sac?
Good advice! Tell it to A&S too! This infighting in the Irish amateur astronomical community is counterproductive and a complete waste of time. There are better things to do.
