I was just looking at Tenerife, which is easier to get to. There are observatories there on the top of the mountain. All the development is on the low lands so if we stayed in a hotel in a small town further up the mountain and then drove up near the summit each evening?

I'm liking this Tenerife idea.
As for buying a plot of land...
How cool would that be!

Tenerife is by far the most built up of the islands(population over 420,000 people) , I've heard its a concrete jungle, I haven't been to that island so I don't know first had, anyone been there ??? Mt Teide is the second highest mountain in Europe, if you want to call Tenerife part of Europe, it is snow capped so you can be on a roasting beach in the morning and skiing in the evening, cool of what !, except for you Frank, best you stay away from the slopes.
I've been to Gran Canaria and I think that would be suitable, the mountains there are fantastic!!, very high and accessible.
I'd be on for any of these islands, so long as we can get a dark sky.

That's funny - the missus and I are heading away in a couple of months & I'm going to try and bring a 12.5" dob if I can get it made in time and it's portable enough (& assuming it works!). So we were also trying to make the same decision.
I looked at COAA but I'd probably be divorced before marriage so we're probably going to head somewhere like Mljet (which is simply stunning and has a population of less than 900 people - very few lights), or a relatively quiet town in Crete or Sardinia.

It certainly is Dave. It's busier than that number would suggest!I've heard its a concrete jungle

The light pollution is likley to be bad if you are surrounded by a tourist coast though right?
Perhaps Michael or Dave could ask Nik Szymanek if he has any advice on where to observe?
