Another option would be to get a Ryanair flight to a destination as far south as possible and then rent a house in the countryside in in the mountains.

Correct. It would mean changing flights in Madrid apparentlyLooks great, so how do we get there, La Palma isn't an easy place to get to from here (last time I checked).

Just did a bit of checking with Ryanair.
Ryanair fly to Tenerife (North). From there one can get a flight to La Palma with a company called Binter Canarias, a division of the Iberia group.
I picked a couple of random dates and flights worked out around 180euro all in per person return with Ryanair to Tenerife. Binter Canarieas www.binternet.com/ operate around 10 flights daily between Tenerife North and La Palma for 57euro each way. So, in total, the flight cost, depending on days etc, would be about 300euro, about half the cost of other options I could find via Madrid.

In terms of accommodation, doesn't look like it would be a problem. Due to the high mountain on the island, the best place would be somewhere on on the south-east side of the island, south of the little airport - and yes, it is a v. small airport:

. A house could be rented in a remote location, which would allow all-nighters to be done directly from basecamp.

300e for travel, thats not bad at all and is very feasible.
and what price would a house be??
Would it be possible to visit some of the observatories while there, maybe pre-arrange something.
If we hire a house ourselves, are we saying we we bring out own equipment or can we still get access to some scopes over there. i'd be as interested in observing as much as imagin. How hard would it be to bring a big scope along?

Depends on whether a 20" dob can be classified as "carry-on luggage".How hard would it be to bring a big scope along?
