Any idea what this may be?

I originally thought of M76 when I saw the first image but it is very small and an extremely difficult object to image. I think I would go with a variation of Daves idea that it is an out of focus star that has suffered vibration on the mount. Just my 2 cents worth.

Any idea what your image scale is so that we can derive the apparent dimensions of this mystery object?

The Crab Nebula is about 6.5'x5.0' ... knowing your image scale, you can easily measure the apparent size of your object so as to see how close it comes to that for M1.

Sorry i'm new to all this so i dont follow. All i do know is that i was using the 10mm eyepiece that is supplied with the Celestron 90EQ and my Nikon coolpix L5. I am a COMPLETE amateur with regards to astro photography........but i was amazed that i managed to capture SOMETHING apart from the moon.

I simply hold my camera up to the eyepiece on the scope and focus the camera and take pics (and hope there is not much shaking). I have some GREAT moon pics.

Just another thought, since this is the only object in the field of view it is more likely to be a star than a nebula. If you caught a nebula then there should be a lot of stars visible.

If you invert the colour (of original image) using Paint....................it looks to be more then an out of focus star. I say this because in the same inverted image there are a couple of stars and they are perfect dots. Not sure if this has any relevance.

I thought those may have been not pixels. What exposure length did you use?

ust another thought, since this is the only object in the field of view it is more likely to be a star than a nebula. If you caught a nebula then there should be a lot of stars visible.

Pheonix that thought also crossed my mind. As i said above there are 2 other objects in the frame (i assume they are stars).

I have viewed the Orion nebula using the same 10mm eye piece and it was the only object in view. There were no other stars. So i really dont know.

Considering the wide angle field of the original image..........if it was a nebula surely there would be many stars in it. I can only find 2.

So an out of focus star is also a strong contender.

Thanks for all this input guys. I'd really like to know what it is...........but all the info being put forward is great because it is giving me thoughts, ideas and i'm learning all the time.
