What exposure length did you use?

It's an instant digital cam.

I simply hold my camera up to the eyepiece on the scope and focus the camera and take pics (and hope there is not much shaking). I have some GREAT moon pics.

yes you do have some great Moon pics. Very nice <applause>

Now its time for me to play party pooper, cause it just struck me what you captured. I'm pretty sure its an internal reflection inside the telescope or eyepiece from one of the Seven Sisters. When you say you held the camera to a 10mm eyepiece I knew it can't be a nebula since you would need to expose for perhaps 30 seconds to stand any chance of capturing even the brightest of nebulas.

Sorry if thats not the answer you were hoping for:(

The good news is there is lots you can do with your digicam and scope. You will though, need something to clamp the camera rigidly to the scope if you hope to get anything other than the Moon. A great option is something like the baader microstage adaptor. It holds your camera firmly in place in front of an eyepiece and is adjustable. Here's what it looks like;

With something like that you could then go and capture other images such as planets and the brighter deep sky objects like the seven sisters.

That effectively eliminates nebula. The Nikon has no chance of picking up the crab neb and zzero chance of M76 with a one shot image. Looks like a star is prime candidate.

I also like the questions surrounding the exposure length? Was it something like a fraction of a second (ex. 1/60th sec) or was it an extended exposure (ex. 30 seconds)?

On the basis of your comments and the quote highlighted by Kieran, it would certainly rule out ANY sort of nebula .... and which leads us to Dave's conclusion about a possible flare in the optical train.

It doesn't quite look like the crab, but it is the nearest fit to the image I can think of.

Dave, I'm not dissapointed. I welcome all comments. Yes indeed i know i need something to clamp the digi to the scope and it is on my list of things to buy in the next couple of weeks. The pic you posted looks like a pretty good set up.

Where can get it? roughly how much can i expect to pay for it?
