dmcdona wrote: Carl - a couple of questions:
1. What do the CM1, 2 and 3 number mean at the bottom of the image? I was racking my brains but couldn't figure them out...
2. Also the de-rotated times - I could hazard a guess but it might be better coming from you
3. Whilst it is a superb image, there is a 'softness' to it. Is that seeing, un-perfect focus or planetary rotation? Or something else?
Finally, do you think you could get to the level of Chris Go or Peachy? Or are Irish skies to rubbish for that? If so, I guess you'll be heading to Barbados soon enough...
Cheers and well done - superb image. Thanks for sharing it.
Dave
p.s. Could very well be one of the Children of Lir in the centre
Hi Dave mc,
Some very good questions indeed.
1- This is the science part for the BAA Jupiter Section programme and is the central meridian longitudes on Jupiter. This link will give you all the info you need www.britastro.org/jupiter/programme.htm
2- Each color channel was 45 seconds X 3 = 135, and then multiplied by 6 is 810 seconds, this number is then divided by 60 thus equaling 13.5 minutes of rotation.
3- Dave this all boils down to the seeing conditions.
To answer your final question there is no reason why we and I mean everyone here can’t be as good as the lads in the UK. For me it’s about being the best that I can be and getting to a level that I’m happy with. Getting everything right under the stars is just the start. When it comes to the processing it’s about identifying the problems and having the understanding and the knowledge in the software to fix it. This takes years of practice and patience that’s why it’s so important to teach the next generation on the way up.
Carl.

Thats an excellent image. Probably the best from Ireland I've seen over the years. Alot of detail that would be useful for others to analyse.
Well done!
