MIke,
I wasn't actually aware of this project within VERITAS regarding gamma ray flashes. However, I am familiar with recent research by LaViolette whom has theorized that conventional SETI has left out pulsars from the equation of candidates.
For the past several years, the SETI Institute's Targeted Search System (TSS) has included algorithms for detecting a variety of pulsing signal in the final analysis stages of its receivers. This is not, of course, a search for pulsars. Nor is there even any need at this time to search for pulsars, for purposes of SETI, as so many of them are already known.
TSS searches for sets of three regularly-spaced "pulses", where "pulse" is defined as energy in a frequency bin exceeding some threshold value. This constitutes a very crude pulse receiver that would not be sensitive to a wide variety of "type 2" signals as described in The SETI Search Space. For one thing, the generic pulsing signal might consist of very short pulses with concommitant broad spectra (such as pulsar pulses) whose energy would mostly be missed by the TSS algorithm. For another, the TSS algorithm can respond to only a few discrete pulse repetition rates.
The TSS pulsed signal search algorithm is best seen as an afterthought, tacked onto a receiver designed for monochromatic signals, and without even any rationale being offered in support of it.
LaViolette has shown recently additional eclipsing binary pulsars. This required a recalculation of the spatial distributions of pulsars and a review of any conclusions drawn from these distributions. The distribution I find intriguing within the galaxy in relation to where the observer is located.
LaViolette noted that with 433 newly cataloged pulsars, the "clump" originally seen adjacent to the Galactic one-radian point is no longer supported. However, in new discoveries made in September 2005, the positions of the two fastest pulsars in the sky, the Millisecond Pulsar and the Eclipsing Binary Millisecond (EBM) Pulsar, as well as relations between the period of a new eclipsing binary pulsar which lies in the vicinity of the one-radian longitude, and that of the Millisecond Pulsar, all encode the constant p in remarkable ways, supporting the interpretation that "pulsar beacons" may have an extraterrestrial origin.
Obviously their is alot more to this theory that may support this evidence.

For your perusal and judging by the amount of hits on the IFAS website, which is now almost at 50,000 there still remains a huge interest in the UFO phenomenon despite media complicity and the giggle factor…
The fourth Irish International UFO conference will take place in the Bush Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim on Saturday 22nd & Sunday 23rd September 2007.
Speakers are from the United States, Italy, UK, Ireland and Wales. Just a snippet of speakers include…
Paola Harris (Italy) is an Italian-American photojournalist and investigative reporter in the field of extraterrestrial related phenomena research. She is widely published, free-lance writer, especially well known in Europe. She has studied extraterrestrial related phenomena since 1979 and is on personal terms with many of the leading researchers in the field.
Malcolm Robinson (U.K.) In 1979 formed his own research society entitled, “Strange Phenomena Investigationsâ€, (SPI), which was basically set-up to collect, research, and publish, accounts relating to most aspects of strange phenomena, and to purposely endeavor to try and come up with some answers to account for what at present eludes us.
He will be showing numerous photographs taken from around the world which claim to show 'alien' life forms, including 'The Alien in the Attic', 'The Chile Demon' and 'The Arctic Alien', amongst others. His Presentation will be entitled "Alien Photographs (alleged photos of Alien Beings)".
David Coggins (U.K.) is a hypnotherapist who over the past 20 years has done regression hypnosis on people who have had UFO experiences, with remarkable results. He will be showing some extraordinary tapes showing what people have revealed whilst under hypnosis. He has appeared on DVDs with Budd Hopkins in America.
Yvonne R. Smith (United States) Certified Hypnotherapist, Alien Abduction researcher. Yvonne is now focused on educating the public nationally and internationally and to capture the attention of mainstream media that these abduction experiences are REAL! Yvonne has appeared on numerous national and international television and radio shows and has been and continues to be a guest speaker at conferences world wide!

I attended the conference last year (my first ever such UFO conference) with an open and thinking mind, I found many interesting people to converse with that have actively studied this phenomenon at a deep level, other ordinary people that have had extraordinary UFO experiences that kindly offered their time to talk about them to me.
Most of the speakers were excellent and the information, photos and videos were I have to say very compelling in favor of something very strange happening in our skies that cannot readily be explained by mainstream science. There was of course some information presented that I would have disagreed with initially, I guess no one has all the answers and it’s the finding out and completing ones own investigations that one can perhaps offer that extra piece of the jigsaw to fit into this complex subject.
I viewed an amazing DVD last year at the conference and I am still at a loss to explain everything in it, title of the video is “Jaime Maussan and Santiago Yturria Garza (Mexico) Presents 'Amazing new UFO footage and updates from South of the Border†2006 edition.
I think the two hour video is available on You Tube but it is broken down into segments, everything from flying humanoids, large UFO fleets to an amazing video of an ET interaction with humans and lots of photos. I highly recommend that you view this DVD in its entirety!

I was at the conference last year. I had met some other IFAS members from the previous year whom were surprised by the level of research and evidence garnered in this field.
A friend of mine, whom is an ex RAF pilot was with me at the last conference. He had seen a UFO type craft close up 200 m away. He told me his other pilot colleagues had seen similar 'craft' but were told to shut up about these real arial events
It was good to see the presence of University of Mexico scientists ackowledging the evidence of the first ever gravitational (inter dimensional) hole on Earth about two years ago, where these manifestations occur. It appears that this hole has been intentionally located for the manifestation of these UFO type entities. This footage was on the Mexico video. These scientists invited other scientists from around the world to study this extraordinary location.
There were some extraordinary UFO video footages taken from around the world that really need analysis by the scientific community. We are witnessing substancial evidence that UFOs are real. What they are is another factor which is certainly worth scientifically pursuing. What is surprising is that the frequency of sightings and video footage has been rising each year.
You mentioned the Mexico footage, in particular the flying humanoids are now been recorded in different parts of the world in the last 3 years. There is obviously an evolution here as to what is been presented in the sky. I find the whole thing so intriguing that requires interdiscilinary research to further study these events.
I am looking forward to the next conference.

Hi Ronan
I would tend to agree about the drifting balloon hypothesis after watching this video many times and from the guys offering their explanations, this seems a logical conclusion in my opinion and seems to fit the available evidence, this UFO (unidentified Flying object) event could now be termed an IFO (Identified Flying Object).
There is a very big interest in the reality of UFO occurrences (whatever UFOs are and possible intelligence/s behind them) across cultural and social domains throughout the world for thousands of years, this has been reflected in a small way and in its own right by the amount of ‘hits’ on the IFAS website (close to 50, 000 as I write this) which many people on this forum have contributed excellent, thought provoking and interesting material within a good honest open debate, I for one have learned so much from this and wish to continue to be offered an opportunity to explore this reality further through this website. I have spent many hours under the skies (when they are clear  ) engaging in my favourite hobby and I have witnessed (with other people) high strangeness events on three separate occasions that I am at a complete loss to explain which could be classed as a “UFO†event (whatever they turn out to be).
The UFO phenomena is something that simply will not go away even after 60 years of media complicity and the promotion of the “giggle factor†by them which honestly would even offend the average intelligent human. Why has it not gone away, simply, if there was no substance to it at all it would have been long forgotten, but interestingly it hasn’t and there is decades of available evidence to show that there is a very real tangible active phenomena happening within our biosphere, now the big question; what is it all about, I don’t know for sure, the extraterrestrial hypothesis is only one explanation, there are other explanations.
If one digs deeper and leaves behind personnel opinions on this matter and actually looks at available evidence, whether scientific research or empirical evidence from videos, photos, landing and other physical traces, radiation readings, radar returns, witness testimonies (affidavits) from airline pilots, astronauts, military, police, scientists, astronomers, politicians and members of the public from all social backgrounds and ages one can see something of an evolution of a construct of reality we will honestly have to face up to one day whatever that reality turns out to be remains elusive at the moment.
The UFO situation is taken very very seriously indeed by military intelligence circles across the globe for many decades and continues to be the case; this is easily provable though FOI (Freedom of Information) acts. In fact, the “Ministry of Defence, MOD (UK), as top of its most requested material is directly related to UFOs, I would highly recommend that if you could obtain a book by Timothy Good, “Above Top Secret†you will understand why this is the case and indeed to look at the work of an official former MOD UFO principle investigator, Nick Pope.
If a UFO is seen in the sky by Joe O’ soap that lives in rural Ireland, it may not go down as an important event (perhaps to the individual it will) however if a UFO is manoeuvring up the runway of a military base where nuclear warheads are stored and it (UFO) is engaging the computers and equipment on the weapons storage site then that is an important event of great concern and considered a national security threat at the highest levels. Similarly if a UFO disables a missile in flight with live warheads, which again will not go unnoticed by our authorities, this information is readily available from the people that were there and through FOI.
Recently the Mexican military has released videos of UFOs taken from their fighter jets, the French authorities have recently released material dating back over 30 years, I believe the MOD (UK) will perhaps release the bulk of their material due to demand and following examples from other authorities across the globe. In fact as of late, there has been an increase in UFO activity across the globe, combine this with the release of UFO records and now new cases involving closer Extraterrestrial / human events with multiple witnesses, videos and physical traces which has universities from the USA and Mexico completely at loss to explain. Should be interesting times ahead for all of us!

Sorry guys I but in my own personal opinion this talk of a fourth Irish International UFO conference, flying humanoids etc etc does not belong here on these boards, this like the talk about aliens in the Venusian Atmosphere two years ago that just went on and on.
