And what exactly is your point? Posting pointless and unconnected pieces of information is not really a good way to argue a point. On the contrary, it strongly implies you have no actual come backs to the arguments presented so you're just posting something random as a diversionary tactic.
Paul, our discussion here probably doesn't belong in General but it certainly has a place on these boards, for example under the History of Astronomy section.

I don't think so! Most of the last 14 posts have been where the bleedin' alphabet came from?
Anyway, now that Paddy's Day is over, and only 4 of the 19 replies (till this one) have anything to do with the original topic (the rest practically nothing to do with Astronomy), can we maybe close it? No? Oh well....

Your a moderator, your call, I never moderate any topic I'm involved in so I'm certainly not going to anything.

...illiterate Vikings and Celts would still be battling it out in the uncivilised backwater that was Northern Europe.
Peter.
I know this is not astronomy related... but oh dear me.... really Peter, have you ever been to any of the Scandinavian countries ? My family is Danish and I can assure you that there is more to Viking culture than plundering Europe. Did you know that the Vikings were the first Europeans to reach America and that they used the position of the stars to navigate their ships well away from any visible coastlines ? ... please think a bit further before you call other (historic) cultures uncivilised....

Everybody knows?Everybody knows that Ogham is a coded form of the Roman Alphabet.
No Ogham on my keyboard I notice.
Peter.
Is that an appeal to numbers and appeal from ignorance?
I think so.
Everybody who's studied Celtic Culture knows that Ogham is a mystery language, taking (for example) the translations of the Tree Alphabet one sees that the Ogham is comprable in intent and use to Nordic Bind runes.
You remind me, sorta, like the Creationists on Evolution. "Everyone knows that if we evolved from monkeys, there'd be none left".
Also, I have an Ogham mapping for my Keyboard. It uses the Beth Luis Nearn arrangement, though there are others. Even if I didn't, | ' / and . are all you'd need such that ' ''''' .. // forms a stanza.
In short Peter, you're wrong.

Now, as for the ancient Gaels being barbarians. Let's not forget they had a state sponsored arts program in which no artist could be harmed under penalty of death. They had a state sponsored education system also.
As for what everyone knows, everyone knows that Maewyn Succat did not bring Christianity to Ireland, the shamrock myth is a pile of arse (the Gaels had trinitarian Gods {Morrigan and BrÃÂd spring to mind}). So, as to Bart's question, what exactly are we celebrating other than the destruction of Irish Culture?
