Both serious and non-serious astrophotographers use Canons. Toys such as Nikons are used for book-ends, something for a young puppy to chew on (instead of your shoes) etc.

Amen! I cherish my EOS 300D as well ... it has earned its keep in a most impressive fashion.I have a Canon 300d and it makes for a fine Lunar and deepsky (brighter objects) camera, comes very handy on holidays too. ! I'd get one of these before a "proper" deepsky camera if you are not certain about it.

Just to give you an idea, I am looking to get a second EOS 300D. I consider it that good. You can find them on Astromart, for example, for under $300 and in excellent condition with a small number of actuations.
Sorry for answering your question indirectly. Jerry Lodriguss is perhaps the exception in the world of astrophotography and, furthermore, he has been a Nikon user since the dark ages (pun intended).
