John - for a budget of 250-400 US$ the imager you get will be limited.

However, I'd better take a step back here.

The question you really need to ask yourself is "what astrophotos do I want to take". If its scrapbook album stuff of bright objects (moon, planets etc), your budget would be OK. the Meade DSI's, Webcams and Celestron LPI etc are all good.

If its knock yer socks of deep sky stuff, you'd need to add a leat a zerpo even adding a zero onto your budget values.

Of course, all this depends on the setup you're going to attach your imager to. You really need to match your astrophotography requirements (scrapbook or glossy coffee table prints) with your telescope, mount and imager.

This all said, Adorama in New York are grand. When you go in, ask ofr Mike Peoples and tell him I sent you

Cheers
Dave

Hi

Andorama is the best place and easy to find in downtown manhattan on 18th street. They are quite a big place with most things on show

www.adorama.com/Search-Results.tpl?page=...s&searchinfo=dsi

But beware beacuse they are closed on Saturday all day and are only open until 1pm on Friday but open all day Sunday.

You can get a cheap DSI or one of those firewire Image Source ones but I dont think you will be saving much but if anyhing goes wrong with them you will have to go back to NY to avail of the warenty. They are also both uncooled so although they are probobly great entry cameras and take good pictures in a few months you may find that you will be limited. I would consider hanging back and looking for maybe a better camera such as an Atik or Starlight express if the budget can stretch.

Anyway thats just my opinion

Eqipment
Lx90 8' SCT, UHC Narrowband filter
SPC900 Webcam, Atik 16ic
Astrozap Dew Heater
Meade eyepieces & barlows 9,26 and 32mm
Moonfish 32mm 2"

As Dave says John, I'd check both the Adorama and B&H Photo web sites in New York before you travel -- I was there last week and they were closed for the Jewish New Year. They reopened on Sunday morning but the astronomy showroom in Adorama was still closed (an employee didn't show up for work!). It's handy to look at the web sites beforehand to find out the product numbers of the gear you want -- makes it easier for the staff to pull the stuff as it's mostly in a storeroom rather than on display. No probs coming through this side with stuff (did I just say that 8-) 8-) )
