Next question is: where can you get an Imperial Allen key when almost everything in the country (except for American-branded telescopes and camera tripods) is metric?

Ask a friendly mechanic, took me 3 days to find one.
Should have mentioned that they call this the hidden screw.
Loosen both of the Alt screws and tilt the head forward. The head is in about an inch.

Some hardware shops have them. Also, Radionics, an Irish-based on-line tool and components supplier, seems to stock them: www.radionics.ie/electronic-components-i...s-allen-key-set.html

I got a set in a local hardware shop in Limerick, if there is a maplin near you, they'd have them also.

Reading the thread and having a similar prob with my RA drive I decided to 'experiment' with the drive. I powered up the scope, and the RA drive started to move at max speed (the only speed I was able to get the drive to move at) but before the scope impacted yet again on the mount I undid the RA lock allowing the drive to continue on it's merry way, which it did for roughly a turn and a half before a error message appeared on the controller to the tone of 'motor drive failure'. The the controller said something else which I can't recall but made me press the enter key. The RA motor moved a little then stopped. So I re-alinged the scope to the little arrows and had a play with the hand set. Firstly I saw that I now had speed control over both the Dec and RA. So I did an two star alignment, the RA drive behaved perfectly, as it did on the five other alignment runs I did on it! So it seems the prob with my RA drive is solved! Maybe this will help, I hope so! :D

Good news for you Peter!

Let's hope it stays fine.

You seem to have reache a result.
What then do you think is the issue with the motor?

I think it its a small electronic fault.
The fact that most of them work ok upo to some point then
go berserk and die seems to me that there is some
combination of signals that 'confuse' of for the want of a better
word 'short' the circuitry' and then the autostar 'self preservation' mode kicks in.

Who'd be an electronic engineer anyway!?!?!
